Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dusk free?

Yes — free and open source, no ads, no tracking, and every feature is free for everyone. If Dusk has earned it, there's an optional supporter tier in the app (one-time tips or a small subscription) that helps cover the App Store costs and unlocks alternate app icons as a thank-you.

What license is Dusk under?

Dusk's source is released under the MIT License, so you're free to read, modify, and redistribute it. Video playback is powered by VLCKit, which is licensed separately under the LGPL v2.1.

Can I AirPlay without Dusk on the TV?

Yes. Dusk streams to Apple TV, Mac, and AirPlay-enabled smart TVs while your iPhone or iPad stays in control. Plex may prepare a compatible stream when the original format cannot play on the receiver.

Can I watch together with friends?

Yes. Start or join a FaceTime call, then tap SharePlay in the Dusk player on iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV. Play, pause, and seeking apply to everyone, and moving on to the next episode brings the whole group along. Live TV is the one exception—every tuned channel has its own timeline, so it can't be kept in sync.

Do my friends need their own Plex access to watch together?

Yes. Everyone needs Dusk and their own access to the server hosting the video, because each device streams it from Plex directly—so everyone gets their own quality, subtitles, and audio track. SharePlay never carries your Plex token or a playback URL; it only says which item the group is watching.

Will Dusk support Jellyfin?

It's on the roadmap. First we want to refine and polish the Plex experience, then we'll expand to other backends.

Can I download movies and shows?

Yes. Dusk can save movies, shows, seasons, and episodes for offline playback, including the metadata and artwork needed to browse what you have saved.

Does Dusk have AI upscaling?

Yes. AI Upscaling can make older or lower-resolution files look sharper, especially on larger screens. It is automatic by default, and you can turn it off in Settings.

Does Dusk require a powerful server?

Usually no. Dusk starts with direct play, so your server normally just serves the file as-is. Manual quality changes can use Plex transcoding, which requires a server capable of handling the selected quality.

What formats are supported?

MKV, MP4, MOV, HEVC, H.264, DTS, AAC, AC3, PGS subtitles, SRT, ASS.

Does Dusk collect any data?

No. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Was this app built with AI coding assistance?

Yes. That said, I'm the main developer and bring ~7 years of professional software engineering experience to the project. I review every change, make the calls that matter, and fully stand behind what ships.
